01.26Something Old, Something New: Lena Dystant

For this edition of Something Old, Something New, we caught up with our friend Lena Dystant, a writer, stylist, and brand consultant whose finely honed personal style is something we’ve long admired. Lena showed us a cherished vintage bomber jacket that hasn’t left her regular rotation for the last 15 years, and how she styles it with her Aurora Middle English shoes – new in at the Multibrand Store.

What is it?

A 1965 USAF L-2B, manufactured by Alpha Industries. A lightweight version of the better-known MA-1 bomber.

How long have you had it?

15 years.

How did it come into your possession?

Dave of Ragtop, an incredible American vintage dealer, discovered this one on a buying trip. I had asked him to keep an eye out for a bomber in a smaller size, and when he presented it to me at Spitalfields Thursday Antique market, I couldn't have parted with my cash any quicker.

What does it mean to you?

My American vintage habit has slowed over the years, but this jacket always reminds me of the thrill of finally getting hold of something I'd obsessed over, usually via an issue of Free & Easy magazine. Like all the best vintage hunters, Dave would take the time to explain each and every detail: it meant that every piece I picked up from him felt incredibly special. Military clothing is always function first and I love the idea of something so utilitarian carrying all these little unknown stories of past owners. Romance aside, this jacket works with absolutely everything in my wardrobe and unlike a lot of military gear, it never feels old-fashioned or costume-y. The bomber jacket has found its way through so many eras and subcultures that it just feels permanently fresh.

What do you like about the Aurora shoes?

The full-grain leather is super soft which makes them comfortable from first wear, they just immediately form to your foot. They're handmade so there's a rawness to the way they're constructed which I find really appealing. I also just love the action of buckling them up, they're a sort of pilgrim-coded version of my old school shoes – there's an element of nostalgia there.
